The story behind the black curtain:
It seems a few of our new customers have been "off put" by our black curtain.   I've heard it a few times and it makes me smile a bit, but felt I should share why it's there.   Currently it’s not a permanent fixture, but due to the beginning controversy over it, it’s becoming a bit sentimental…..
 Our opening the storefront was quite unexpected as a few of our new neighbors at my new home felt we would generate too much traffic, so they felt the need to call every city official within four days of me and my family moving in to our new home to complain.  We were told that I could bake from my home and deliver cakes with no problem.  It was that I had a few employees that were the biggest cause for concern.  And I wasn’t about to let 4 people lose their job in this economy.  I know first-hand how difficult it is to find a job right now.  To top if off, I had 30 days to comply.  My options were to fire my employees  or find a commercial location.
Now most of you know how Bella Cakes came to be, but for those of you who don’t ….in a nutshell…the economic downfall in 2008 took a heavy toll on my family.  We lost everything we owned or had while I was 7 months pregnant with my second child.  We moved in with family thankfully to help soften the blow.  We had help from friends, family, and the government to get us back on our feet to which I am so thankful (more on this later). 
 It was my mother’s birthday and I had nothing to give as a gift, which I always did.  She said I could just make her a cake.   My response was that I didn’t have enough money to even buy any ingredients; a tough pill to swallow for a very independent person who I had always been even as a child.  So she bought me the ingredients and a Wilton Starter kit.  I had never used an icing tip ever!  But, I was bound and determined to make her the best looking cake she’d ever had.   I think I did OK, and so did a few others at her surprise birthday party.  As months went by more and more requests were made and I quickly found myself being able to help provide for my family and bills begun getting paid.   My family of five became independent again.   The sigh of relief was incredible and still is even as I wake up to this day.   There isn’t a day that goes by that I don’t thank God for giving me the opportunity I have right now.  And every now and again I still cry thinking about how I got here.
So back to the shop.   After only two weeks of moving into our new home, while still attempting to set up our home and run a business, I now was faced with finding a commercial location to move into and set up without skipping a beat business wise, and thirty days to do it.   Harvey Lindsay Commercial Real Estate was amazing.  I told them the whole story, they found the perfect spot.  I nearly fainted at the thought of taking on additional expenses and took a giant leap of FAITH.  I had made it for four years so far, I can do this I told myself.  With limited funds, we opened the store.   And we never closed shop or stopped taking calls during the entire move.  I applaud my amazing employees who were able to go with the flow for nearly 3 months during this whole process.  It wasn’t easy for all of us.  I spent one evening balling my eyes out in the new store by myself asking how in the heck did I get here?  I can’t take the pressure and stress of all of this.  Dare I utter the words, “I hate my neighbors for putting me through this!”  Then a snap back into reality.  God never gives you what you can’t handle, and from the words of M. Scott Peck…”Life is difficult, once you understand and accept this, life is no longer difficult.”  It was once again my time to pull my big girl britches up and get a “let’s do this!” attitude.  So I did. 
I was very uncertain of where I wanted walls.  After all, I wasn’t sure how many customers I’d have; did I want to include retail space?  If I put a wall here, would I have to take it down later, because I didn’t allow myself enough space out front?  Soooo, I put a temporary curtain up so I could figure it out later and not waste money on changing my mind at the suggestion of a family friend who actually went to purchase the black taffeta that the fabric store had on sale.  Only cost me $127.  Not bad I thought.   So for those of you who are “put off”  by our black curtain, I hope you have a bit more insight to why it’s there, in no way is it there to upset you or “hide the goings on”.  It will remain there until I have the appropriate funds in place to do it the right way I want it.  And I can assure you, it is not a cheap undertaking, after all I have expensive taste and even though my amazing husband will be the one who knocks it out for me, it will still cost me.  It will be great!  Trust in this.   
There have been many tears shed while writing this, remembering how rough things have been and how great things have turned out to be, and I just want to thank the many fans we have.  While opening the store, I knew I would be up for plenty of critics,  I wasn’t sure I was ready, but have taken it day by day.  Your support means more to me than you know.  And as a show of thanks, I give back to my community as much as I can through donations and as much support as I can when asked.  Because that same support is what put us in this store and for that I am truly thankful, so for those of you that are “put-off” by the black curtain and want to know what’s behind it, this is my story.  While it is temporary, I assure you that Bella Cakes remains solid with or without walls and I wish to THANK YOU for your continued patronage as we continue to improve and grow.

How do I place an order?
We accept orders through the website, emails, and also over the phone or in person by appointment.
How far in advance should I place my order?
As soon as possible, generally at least two weeks is preferred, and much sooner for wedding cakes.  If you have a wedding during the months of April - August please call as early as a year in advance.  If you feel you have missed this mark, please call anyway there may always be an opening.
Can I meet with someone in person to discuss my cake, and/or taste samples?
Absolutely!  Please call to schedule an appointment.  Please let us know how many people will be attending, and if there are any specific flavors you would like to try.  IF not all parties can attend, let us know in advance and we can put something together on the side as a "to go".
How far in advance do I need to schedule the appointment?
Depending on availability, generally only a few days are needed.  Tastings are $20, and can be mailed to out of state customers.  Tastings that are mailed will be mailed out on a Tuesday or Wed. so to prevent any perishables sitting in any facility longer than necessary.
Can I bring a picture of the cake I want to the tasting?
Of course you can!  We have customized cakes to match headbands, napkins, invitations, shoes, purses, clothing, board games, pets, etc!  For brides especially, we prefer to have color swatches brought or mailed, so that the colors of the cake will match the colors or the wedding and reception.   (We have also matched brides' cakes to their dresses!)
Do I have to have something that the cake has to be matched to?
No.  We often have clients who give us a theme, and leave it up to artist interpretation on how the cake should look.  We are very flexible when it comes to working with our customers.  We can sketch and exchange ideas to find the perfect cake for you.
Can I bring items to be put on the cake?
Yes, please bring these items ahead of time.  And make us aware that this is an option at the time of placing your order.
Can I request a flavor that is not listed on the flavor list?
Yes, in fact, this is how we have acquired some of our most popular flavors.  W also try suggested recipes.
How much do the cakes cost?
Please e-mail or call for a quote.  We do custom cakes and prices vary, and are based on the number of servings, and typically run anywhere from $2.50-$4.50 per serving depending on the design and level of difficulty.  If you see a cake in our gallery and would like a quote, please include the amount of people you will be serving.   All our cakes and designed can be adjusted to the party size.
How can I pay for my cake?
We accept cash or credit cards (Visa, MC, Amex, Disc.)  Any cake less than $125 should be paid in full at the time of order.  Larger cake orders require a 50% deposit and payments can be made in increments as long as it is completely paid 15 days prior to the event date. ****A custom cake MUST be paid for 15 days prior to the event.  If it is not paid for it is NOT considered an order and will NOT go into our production que until paid for.  Any custom cake NOT paid for is subject to manager approval to be made.  
What happens if my event is canceled or rescheduled?
In the event that your cake order needs to be canceled or rescheduled a gift certificate for the amount you have paid will be issued to you in which you may use any way you see fit as long as a written request has been submitted 30 days prior to your event.  If a cancellation is made within 4 weeks to your event then all monies per contract are due in full.
Do you have a stand that I can rent for my cake?
We have a variety of stands and other display equipment you can rent to display your cake.  The cost is a nonrefundable $50.  The stand/equipment/pieces must be returned to us on or before the Wednesday after the event.  If it is not returned, or if it is returned with parts or pieces missing, you will be charged for the cost of the stand.
Can I pick my cake up or have it delivered?
Either.  Cakes can be picked up during our business hours.  We prefer to deliver wedding cakes and most tiered cakes.  The delivery charges for various local cities is under "pricing/cake flavors".
Should I call before I come to pick up my cake?
Please do.  This way we can pull any paperwork that needs to be signed, put the cake in a box if applicable, etc.  We ask for the pick up time a the time of ordering, and please let us know if you would like to change that.  If by chance we are running behind on our pick up times, we will deliver the cake to you at no charge.
Do you have any tips for driving with the cake in my car?
Plenty!  :-)
A spot on the floor board is preferable over a lap or a seat.  Try not to:  speed, take turns too fast, break too hard, accelerate too quickly, or have the heat on too high.  These vary from cake to cake, but we inform customers about anything particular they must pay attention to for their cake.
Please let us know if you will be traveling a far distance with your cake so we can prepare the cake for such travel - or try and talk you into delivery.  ;-)
How should I store my cake?*****
  • If your cake is to be served within the next 2-3 hours it can be left out at room temperature.
  • If your cake is to be served any later, depending on how long, it can/should be placed in the refrigerator.  Any cakes with hand painted details should NOT be placed in the refrigerator if possible as this will cause the details to smear once it begins to sweat.
  • Cakes should NOT be left outside in the heat.
  • We ask that you do not request a cake days before it is to be served.  We would much rather give you a fresh cake that you won't have to worry about storing or getting ruined before the event.
  • Brides, please let us know if your reception is being held outdoors, so we can either coordinate with your venue to keep the cake at a different temperature or in a different location until the start of the event, or we can deliver it in such a way that it will not sit outdoors for hours.
